Invested in the future: helping New Zealanders get to grips with investingPosted to Financial Capability on 02-09-2015
A new online series of short and engaging videos has been launched by the Commission for Financial Capability and NZX to help people who are interested in investing, but unsure where to begin.
Invested is being launched in Money Week to provide a starting point for New Zealanders to learn about the different investment options available to them and to increase discussion of saving and investing for choices in the future.
The joint project features industry experts who provide targeted information, in plain English, about the principles of investing.
CFFC Group Manager Investor Education David Boyle said: “The objective of the Invested website is to give more information to help New Zealanders make better investment decisions for their financial wellbeing.
“We’re living longer and it’s really important that we all, collectively and individually, plan for that so our money lasts as long as we do. Saving and investing a little over a long time will help.”
NZX Head of Markets Mark Peterson commented: “Financial literacy levels among New Zealanders need to improve and it’s great to be working with the Commission for Financial Capability to help to address this.
“The Invested website provides visitors with a valuable understanding of investment products and their different risk profiles.”
The aim was to develop quality, independent investor education, which is available in a user-friendly format that is easy to digest.
And the hope is that people will use the website, then go on to seek information from other sources to better understand the investment choices for their own particular circumstances.
Rob Everett, chief executive at the Financial Markets Authority, features in one of the videos, about the dos and don’ts of investing; understanding risk and how to spot an investment scam.
He said: “We’re pleased to be working with our partners in the Commission and the NZX to give people consistent messages, whether they are first time investors or they want to refresh on the fundamental questions you need to ask. Understanding the kind of investor you are is the key to making smarter decisions.”
The series looks at the basics of KiwiSaver, funds management, investing in the share market and fixed interest, as well as talking about the risks of various investments more generally.
CFFC and NZX joined together to work on Invested after partnering on a series of successful investor education workshops last year.
This is part of a shared focus on improving investor capability and decision-making to help New Zealanders get ahead financially.
